Kyrgyzstan Road Trip: What Budget Should You Plan For?

There are no direct flights from France, Belgium or Switzerland, so expect one stopover, usually in Moscow or Istanbul, for a total journey time of around 9 hours. A return ticket from Paris or Brussels costs an average of €600 per person, depending on the season and how far in advance you book. The earlier you book and the more flexible you are with your dates, the better the fare.

Once you land in Bishkek, transport is the next major expense. Fuel costs around €0.80 per litre in Kyrgyzstan (about 81 soms), which is cheaper than in Western Europe. For a full road trip of around 1,600 km, budget approximately €160 for fuel per vehicle.

Renting a suitable 4x4 yourself is a different story. Prices vary widely depending on the rental company, season and model, but you can quickly expect to pay between €90 and €140 per day. For a ten-day trip, that comes to €900 to €1,400 per vehicle, excluding fuel and the excess payable in case of damage. We strongly recommend taking out that extra cover, by the way, as Kyrgyzstan’s roads can be particularly demanding.

When it comes to food, Kyrgyzstan remains very affordable. A meal at a simple restaurant costs around €5 to €7 on average, while a meal for two at a slightly more upscale place will set you back €20 to €25. A bottle of water costs just a few cents, and a 50 cl local beer costs around €1.20. Budget between €15 and €25 per person per day for food and drinks, depending on how often you eat out or shop at the market.

The range is just as broad here. A basic guesthouse or homestay can cost as little as €15 to €25 a night, while a mid-range hotel costs around €40 to €50. Staying in a yurt camp, such as those on the shores of Song-Kul, falls within a similar price range. The tricky part is that many of these places, especially authentic guesthouses and rural camps, aren't listed on the usual booking platforms. You'll need to arrange them through local networks (the well-known CBT, community-based tourism) or directly once you're there, which takes time and at least a basic knowledge of Russian or Kyrgyz.
